U.S. Navy Signs Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Helicon Chemical

Effort will help enhance Navy’s solid rocket propelled weapons

Orlando, FL, Jun. 08, 2023–Helicon Chemical, the small business that is making a big impact in energetics for military and commercial partners, announced today its four-year Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division (NSWC IHD).  Under the CRADA, Helicon and NSWC-IHD will work together in the design, fabrication, test and demonstration of energetic formulations to enhance the production capabilities of solid rocket motors for use on Navy weapons systems.

NSWC IHD is a field activity of the Naval Sea Systems Command and part of the Navy’s Science and Engineering Establishment — is the leader in ordnance, energetics, and EOD solutions. The Division focuses on energetics research, development, testing, evaluation, in-service support, manufacturing and disposal; and provides warfighters solutions to detect, locate, access, identify, render safe, recover, exploit and dispose of explosive ordnance threats.

Helicon Chemical is developing drop-in-ready, upgraded propellant binder that will improve the performance of missiles, rockets, aerospace propulsion systems and munitions for government and commercial customers. Helicon’s patented technology allows for the rapid modernization of current armaments and future hypersonic weapons programs — aligning with one of the DoD’s top R&D priorities. The binder will help increase speed, lift and overall mission effectiveness of propulsion systems.
